Savoy (Royal House : -1946)
Dynastic family of Italy that emerged northwestern Italy and southwestern France, creating political relations in France, Italy, and the Holy Roman Empire centered on the Piedmont. The family first held the title of Count of Savoy, established under Umberto I Biancamano (died 1048) during the early eleventh century. Under Amedeo VIII (1383-1451), later the Antipope Felix V, the family obtained the title Duke of Savoy from Emperor Sigismund I (1368-1437) after the death of Lodovico I, Prince of Acaia and Lord of Piedmont in 1418. Duke Charles I of Savoy (1468-1490) assumed the title of King of Cyprus and King of Jerusalem and Armenia from Charlotte de Lusignan for a pension of 4300 florins, though the claim was disputed. In 1713, King Philip V of Spain (IV of Sicily) ceded the Kingdom of Sicily to Duke Vittorio Amedeo II (1666-1732), which in turn was exchanged for the Kingdom of Sardinia in 1720 as part of the Treaty of The Hague. The Savoyard kingdom of Sardinia lasted until 1861, when it was absorbed into the united Kingdom of Italy headed by the Savoy family. The Kingdom of Italy and Duchy of Savoy were dissolved in 1946 after World War II.
