Habsburg (Imperial house : 1273-1780)

Noble, royal, and imperial family and ancestral dukes and archdukes of Austria that intermittently ruled the Holy Roman Empire between 1273 and 1806. The Habsburg imperial family held the imperial title of Holy Roman Emperor from 1440 through 1740, when Emperor Charles VI died without a male heir, sparking the War of Austrian Succession. Branches of the family became hereditary heirs for the Kings of Bohemia, Spain, Croatia, and Portugal, while holding other titles across Europe. The Habsburg-Lorraine royal house succeeded to the full control of the Habsburg line after the death of Empress Maria Theresa in 1780.
