Carolingian (Imperial house : 751-987)

Royal and imperial dynasty founded by King Pepin I in 751, when he claimed the title King of the Franks. His son, Charlemagne, united Frankish territories and was named Emperor of the Romans by Pope Leo III in 800. The Carolingians ruled the divided empire of Charlemagne in East Francia until 911 and held the throne of West Francia intermittently until 987.
