Welf (Royal house : -1918)
European noble and royal family, that has included dynasties in Germany, Italy, and Great Britain. The Franconian house established itself in the area of the Meuse-Moselle before creating a base in Bavaria and Brunswick in Lower Saxony. The family was the progenitor of the Este family in Italy and the Hanover dynasty in Great Britain. The family included Holy Roman Emperor Otto IV, before the imperial title was reclaimed by the Hohenstaufen line.
