Bragança (Royal house : 1640-1910)

Portuguese dynasty that ruled as kings of Portugal, of Brazil, and later as emperors of Brazil. The dynasty originated in the 15th century with Alfonso I, Duke of Bragança and illegitimate son of King João I and Inês Pires. In 1640, the Portuguese rebelled against that Hapsburgs and João II, Duke of Bragança, led the rebellion and was named King João IV of Portugal. The Bragança royal house fled to Brazil in 1808 and changed Brazil from a colony to a kingdom, becoming the United Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves. In 1822, Infante Pedro rebelled against João VI and established himself as emperor of Brazil after his returned to Portugal in 1816. The Bragança royal house ended in Portugal with the declaration of a republic in 1910, and in Brazil with the declaration of a republic in 1889.
