Valois (Royal house : 1284-1498)

Cadet house of the Capetian royal house that succeeded the House of Capet to the French throne in 1328. The house was founded by Charles, Count of Valois, the son of King Philip III of France and Isabella of Aragon. Philip VI, the son of Charles of Valois, inherited the Capetian crown of France after the death of King Charles IV, who died without an heir in 1328. The cadet branch Valois-Orléans succeeded the direct line with the coronation of King Louis XII in 1498, who was in turn succeeded by the cadet branch Valois-Angoulême in 1515 with the coronation of King Francis I. The royal house of Valois became extinct through its cadet branches in 1589 with the assassination of King Henry III. The royal line then passed to the royal house of Bourbon.
