Hesse-Kassel (Royal house : 1567-1866)
German noble family that began with establishment of the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel by William IV the Wise (1532-1592), the eldest son of Philip I (1504-1567), Landgrave of Hesse. Following the reorganization of the German states during the German mediatisation of 1803, the Landgraviate of Hesse-Kassel was raised to the Electorate of Hesse and Landgrave William IX (1743-1821) was elevated to Imperial Elector, taking the title William I, Elector of Hesse. The royal line ended with the conquest of Hesse-Kassel by the Kingdom of Prussia in 1866. King Frederick I of Sweden and Grand Prince of Finland (1676-1751) was part of this family.
