Aviz (Royal house : 1385-1580)

The House of Aviz emerged from the dynastic crisis after the death of King Fernando I in 1383, when João I of Portugal (d. 1433), Grand Master of the Order of Aviz and the illegitimate son of King Pedro I of Portugal and Teresa Lourenço, was elected king by the Portuguese Cortes on April 6, 1385. The royal house ended in 1580, when Cardinal-King Henrique of Portugal died without heir. The House was succeeded by the Hapsburgs under King Philip II of Spain (d. 1598), who unified the Iberian kingdoms.
