Montecassino (Monastery)
First established in the 6th century by Benedict, this Benedictine monastery was sacked by invading Lombardsi n 570 and abandoned, reestablished in the 8th century, sacked again in the 9th century, and rebuilt in 949; after being sacked by French troops in 1799, it was dissolved by the Italian government in 1866
