Qeddus Yoḥannes Church

An initial chapel with the ark dedicated to John the evangelist was constructed by (later Empress) Zawditu during one of her residencies in Dabra Tābor. In 1916, Zawditu refused to be crowned before the ark was brought to her in Addis Ababa. The ark arrived in Addis Ababa on 29 Ṭerr 1909 EC (6 February 1917 CE) and was installed in the imperial chapel of the late Emperor Menilek where it stayed until 1915 EC (1922/3 CE), save for being temporarily taken to Mannāgašā Qeddus Giyorgis Church for the coronation of Zawditu on 4 Yakkātit 1909 EC (11 February 1917 CE). Upon the decision of the Empress, the ark was moved to the site of the present church, housed in a temporary structure, until the completion of the building in 1918 EC (1925/6 CE). A new church building was constructed by Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē. Qeddus Yoḥannes Church was under the administration of the nearby Mannāgašā Qeddus Giyorgis Church until 1953 EC (1960/1 CE), when it became autonomous.
