Abadía de Santo Domingo de Silos

Abadía de Santo Domingo de Silos is a Benedictine monastery in the southern part of Burgos Province in northern Spain. Although the monastery dates back to the 7th century, it was previously called San Sebastián de Silos. In the 10th century, the abbey was renamed after the abbot who renovated it under the protection of King Ferdinand I of León, eleventh-century saint Domingo de Silos. The abbey was closed in 1835 with the suppression of monasteries in Spain, but it was reopened in 1880 by Benedictine monks from Abbaye Saint-Martin de Ligugé of the Solesmes Congregation in France. Today the Santo Domingo de Silos monks are famous for singing Gregorian chant.
