École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts (France)

French school of fine arts, established in 1648 as the Académie royale de peinture et de sculpture, suppressed in 1793 during the French Revolution, and reinstated in 1817 under a changed name; it is historically known as the French academy that served as a teaching institution, venue for exhibition, and backer of such art prizes as the Grand Prix de Rome.
