Knights of Malta

Catholic religious order that began in Jerusalem in the eleventh century as a Hospitaller community supporting pilgrims. The original community was recognized as the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in the twelfth century, developing from a hospitaller order to a military religious order protecting pilgrims while maintaining its hospitaller functions. The Order of Saint John of Jerusalem was an international military religious order, whose headquarters moved from Jerusalem, to Acre, to Cyprus, to Rhodes, to Malta, Messina, Catania, and Ferrara and finally to Rome, where it currently has its central convent. The Order is not to be confused with the Anglican Most Venerable Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
