Venerable Order of Saint John of Jerusalem
British royal order of chivalry created by Queen Victoria I. The Order is largely devoted to charitable work, including Saint John's Ambulance Association and an eye hospital in Jerusalem. The Order is one of four other recognized Orders of Saint John that trace its origin to the Hospitaller Order of Saint John Jerusalem in the 12th century. The 19th-century British Protestant chivalric order is not to be confused with the Catholic Sovereign Military Hospitaller Order of Saint John of Jerusalem, of Rhodes, and of Malta, which retains its status as a military religious order.
