Ordre de Saint-Michel

Order of knighthood and chivalry founded by King Loius XI of France, originally composed of 36 knights, but expanded to 100 in 1665. The Order was dissolved in 1791, but reconstituted in a new form under King Louis XVIII in 1816 to include artist, scientific, and literary merits, removing the criteria of nobility. This new Order was officially suppressed in 1830.
