Monastery of Saint Ursula (Valletta, Malta)

The Monasteru ta' Sant'Ursola (Monastery of Saint Ursula) in Valletta, a women's Hospitaller foundation, was founded by Grand Master Hughes Loubenx de Verdalle (1531-1595) in 1583 in Birgu. Papal approval was granted by Pope Gregory XIII in 1584. It moved to Valletta in 1595, and was placed under the authority of the Grand Master in 1597. When the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem was expelled from Malta in 1798 the cloistered nuns stayed on the island and the monastery soon passed under the jurisdiction of the Diocese, then Archdiocese of Malta and is no longer under the jurisdiction of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem.
