Maria Eleonora, Queen of Sweden, 1599-1655

Queen of Sweden, wife of Gustavus Adolphus (1594-1632). Born into the House of Hohenzollern, she was the daughter of John Sigismund, Elector of Brandenburg (1572-1619), and Anna, Duchess of Prussia. She married Gustavus Adolphus in 1620, producing one surviving (legitimate) child, Christina (1626-1689), who would succeed her father as ruler of Sweden from 1632 to 1654. Upon her husband's death, she became estranged from her daughter and, although she wished to return to Brandenburg, she resided in Denmark under the auspices of King Christian IV (1577-1648) and later returned to Sweden, where she died on March 28, 1655.
