Charles II, King of France, 823-877

Also known as Charles the Bald, Charles II was King of West Francia, King of Italy, and Emperor of the Carolingian Empire. A grandson of Charlemagne and product of family disputes, he inherited the western third of the empire. His reign witnessed extensive conflict among relatives and against rebels and foreign invaders. He was able to secure control and retain lands and titles, which he acquired at various times and held until his death in 877. He also notably engaged in diplomacy with Muhammad I (822-886), Emir of Cordoba.
