Pococke, Edward, 1604-1691

English priest, translator, and professor of Arabic at the University of Oxford. An avid collector of manuscripts, he traveled to Syria and Turkey to obtain them and to correspond with other scholars. Whether on commission or for his own research, he obtained and translated numerous Arabic and Syriac texts into Latin. He was also a priest, serving in various capacities as chaplain, parish priest, and canon. He is not to be confused with his son Edward Pococke (d. 1726), who was tutored by him and studied at Oxford like him, yet was inclined to an ecclesiastical rather than a scholarly career.
