- born Aug. 13, 1818 at Kinderhook, New York, died Nov. 13, 1895 in Beirut; educated at Jefferson Medical College, Philadelphia; sent to Lebanon in 1840 as a medical missionary for the Dutch Reformed Church; stationed at Beirut, Abeih, Sidon, and Mount Tabor; studied Arabic; moved to 'Abeih and organized a secondary school for training evangelical ministers; wrote Arabic textbooks; ordained a minister in 1846; completed a translation of the Bible into Arabic in 1865; taught Hebrew for two years at Union Theological Seminary in New York; returned to Beirut; professor of pathology and internal medicine in the medical school of the Syrian Protestant College, which later became the American University of Beirut
