Charles II, King of England, 1630-1685

Charles II was King of England, Scotland, and Ireland. The son of Charles I, he was restored to the throne in 1660, following his failed campaign against the Parliamentary Army in 1651 and years of exile on the Continent. While his installation as monarch was greatly rejoiced and ushered in a backlash against parliamentary rule, his reign was marked by protracted warfare against the Dutch, scrutiny for excessive spending, assassination plots, and efforts to exclude his Catholic brother James (1633-1701) from the line of succession. Despite these complications, his kingdoms witnessed a period of commercial expansion and of scientific innovation, of which he himself was a student and patron. He died without legitimate issue in 1685, leading to the controversial ascension of his brother James.
