Marchese, Saverio, 1757-1833
Saverio Marchese (1757-1833) was a prominent connoisseur and collector of art in Malta in the 18th and early 19th centuries, as well as a patron of literature, art, history, local art history, archaeology, and the Maltese language. He was educated in Rome at the Collegio Novo run by the Piarists, then returned to Malta, where he was invested with the personal title of Count of Meimum by Grandmaster de Rohan of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem in 1793. He directed the Public Works Department as Commissario Generale dei Beni Publici from 1805 to 1809; was affiliated with the University of Malta as a member of the General Council of the university from 1824; and was made knight of the Order of St. Michael and St. George in 1833.
