Vööbus, Arthur, 1909-1988
He was a theologian, scholar of the Syriac language, and college professor. He published on Estonian history, and is perhaps best known for his more than 40 trips to the Near East in search of manuscripts, which he photographed, many of them unknown in the West.

- Born in Estonia in 1909, educated at University of Tartu; ordained in 1932, served as a pastor in Tartu; fled to Germany after invasion, where he was interned by Nazis for opposing fascism; earned his doctorate in 1943, and taught first at University of Tartu (1943–44), then at Baltic University at Hamburg-Pinneberg in Germany; hired by Lutheran Seminary in Chicago (now the Lutheran School of Theology at Chicago), where he worked until his retirement in 1977; lectured as lecture as visiting professor of Syriac language and literature at the Oriental Institute of the University of Chicago; published on Estonian history; made more than 40 trips to the Near East in search of manuscripts, which he photographed, many of them unknown in the west
