Anselm, Archbishop of Canterbury, 1033-1109

French abbot, prelate, theologian, and philosopher. He was embroiled in the Investure Controversy and in conflict with consecutive English monarchs (William II and Henry I), resulting in exile on both occasions. Due to the philosophical approach of his writings, in particular his ontological argument for the existence of God, he is often considered a founder of Scholasticism. He is was canonized as a saint.
