Clemens August, Archbishop and Elector of Cologne, 1700-1761
Clemens August was a prelate and Elector from the Wittelsbach dynasty. With the help of his uncle, Joseph Clemens, Elector-Archbishop of Cologne, Clemens advanced rapidly in ecclesiastical posts, eventually obtaining his uncle's position. His family was deeply embroiled in dynastic struggles, first with the War of the Spanish Succession (1701-1714), and later with the War of the Austrian Succession (1740-1748). As Elector-Archbishop as well as Prince-Bishop of Münster, Hildesheim, and Osnabrück, he originally sided with the Austrain Habsburg-Lorraine, yet was prone to switching allegiances, perhaps swayed by political advisors and by financial considerations. He was a patron of the arts, responsible for the building of Austusburg and Falkenlust Palaces in Brühl. He was the last Wittelsbach prelate and elector of Cologne, ending the dynasty's tenure of 178 years.
