Bertrand, Pierre, 1280-1349

French theologian, lawyer, and prelate. He studied and taught law at several universities and held high governmental positions. Upon becoming a priest, he was quickly elevated to the sees of Nevers and Autun and made a cardinal by Pope John XXII. He founded charitable institutions at Annonay and the Collège d'Autun, which provided education to poor students in theology, law, and the arts. His legal work focused on the rights and privileges of the church, including opnions concerning the extent to which ecclesiastical privilege superceded the decisions of secular courts.
