Boufflers, Stanislas-Jean de, 1738-1815
Stanislas-Jean de Boufflers was a French writer born in 1738 to Louis François de Boufflers-Remiencourt and Marie Françoise Catherine de Beauvau-Craon. His father was the Marquis de Boufflers and his mother was the mistress of the King of Poland. Because of his parents' social standings, Boufflers was raised in the French court. He became a Knight of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem as a minor, but did not profess and was not fully received into the Order. His status as Chevalier of the Order of Saint John allowed him to hold church benefices. A poet and storyteller, was Governor of Senegal between 1786 and 1787, and was elected to l'Academie française in 1788. He served as Mestre de camp in 1767 and Colonel du régiment in 1777, Maréchal de camp in 1784. He was named as a deputy to the Estates General of 1789. He was appointed assistant librarian of the Bibliothèque Mazarine in 1803. He married Françoise Eléonore Dejean de Manville in 1797, who was the widow Joseph, Comte de Sabran. He was also a member of the Kungliga Svenska Vetenskapsakademien.
