Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, 1528-1580
Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, was noted for the recovery of the Savoyard state from the French following the Battle of St. Quentin (1557), and for moving its capital to Turin. He was the son of Charles III, Duke of Savoy, and Beatrice of Portugal. In his role as Grand Master of the Order of Saint Lazarus of Jerusalem and the Order of Saint Maurice, Emmanuel Philibert of Savoy (1553-1580) asked Pope Gregory XIII to merge the two Orders to create a unified Ordine dei Santi Maurizio e Lazzaro with the bull Pro commissa nobis on November 13, 1572.
