Philip IV, King of Spain, 1605-1665

Spanish king (Philip IV in Castille and Philip III in Aragon; Philip III in Portugal), son of Philip III of Spain and Margaret of Austria. The Spanish Empire had expanded during his reign, yet was in general decline due to unsuccessful domestic and military reforms. He is noted for his ambitious attempt to restore Spanish hegemony in Europe. He was a patron of the arts, notably of painter Diego Velásquez, and an avid collector.
