- Description
- Henry Graves, born 17 Jul 1806; died 23 Aug 1892 in St James, City of Westminster, Greater London, England; "By the age of sixteen, he was working as an assistant to an art dealer and later for Hurst, Robinson and Company as manager of their print department. In 1825, he with Francis G. Moon and J. Boys purchased the business. By 1844, he became the sole owner and changed the name to Henry Graves and Company. Throughout his career, he was recognized as the leading London print seller. He published engravings from the works of Turner, Wilkie, Frith, and Grant among many others. His most prominent and valued editions include the work of Reynolds, Lawrence, Gainsborough, Liverseege and Sir Edwin Landseer. He was one of the founders of "The Art Journal," and the "Illustrated London News." He served as a member of the Printsellers' Association, the Artists' General Benevolent Fund and as a governor of the Shakespeare memorial at Stratford. He was the younger brother of the engraver, Robert Graves, A.R.A. His son Algernon, an art historian and dealer, took over his father's company upon his death."
