Description
Zawditu; born 29 April 1876 in Ennawāri; died 2 April 1930 in Addis Ababa; Empress of Ethiopia 1916-1930; lived in Addis Ababa; Dabra Tābor; member of the Ethiopian Orthodox Church; first marriage to rās Ar'ayā Śellāsē, son of Emperor Yoḥannes IV, from 1883-1888 (his death); fourth marriage to rās Gugsā Walē in 1900; divorced Gugsā Walē in order to ascend throne in 1916; crowned Empress 11 February 1917 at Gannata Ṣegē Giyorgis church; involved in construction of Qeddest Śellāsē cathedral in Addis Ababa; crowned rās Tafari (the future Emperor Ḫāyla Śellāsē) king in 1928 after an armed insurrection; nominally Empress but effectively without power for the final two years of her life; buried 8 April 1930 in Ba'atā Church in Addis Ababa
