Welser, Marcus, 1558-1614
German banker, politician, astronomer, and historian. Born into a wealthy financing family, he studied at the Università di Padova, was a civic official in Augsburg, and traveled extensively to France and Italy, making scholarly connections in Paris and Rome. He became a member of the Accademia dei Lincei in Rome and the Accademia della Crusca in Florence, engaging in debates with Galileo and others surrounding the discovery of sunspots. A humanist scholar, he promoted the study of Greek and Latin authors by financing the publishing house "Ad Insignia Pinus." His most well-known work is his early histoy of the Bavarian, entitled Rerum Boicarum libri quinque. He was mayor of Augsburg.
