Pesaro, Giovanni, 1587-1659
Italian politician, military officer, and diplomat. Despite accusations of once abandoning a garrison under his command in 1642, years later he was able to use his advocacy for continuing war with the Ottoman Empire (War of Candia, 1645-1669) to navigate through Venetian politics. He served as Procurator of St. Mark's and as Venetian ambassador to the Vatican. He was elected Doge of Venice in 1658, and died the following year.
