Melanchthon, Philip, 1497-1560
German humanist. Professor of Greek, theology, and philosophy at the University of Wittenberg, he was one of the main disciples and defenders of Luther. On the death of the latter, he became the head of the Lutheran church. and tried to iron out the differences between the different currents of the Reformation, and between Protestants and Catholics.
