Fabricius, Georg, 1516-1571
Born with the surname Goldschmidt, Georg was educated at the University of Leipzig. In 1536 he enrolled at the University of Wittenberg, moved to the University of Leipzig in 1538 and was then a teacher in Chemnitz and Freiberg. He travelled to Italy the following year, writing a comprehensive study of Roman antiquities and their literary references that he published in 1550 as Roma. In 1546 he was appointed rector of Saint Afra in Meissen, influencing the Saxon school system. In 1549 he published the first short selection of Roman legal inscriptions in stone, giving them the same status of manuscripts. Twenty years later, he also published a chronicle of Meissen and was crowned poet laureate by Maximilian II in 1570.
