Brunfels, Otto, 1488-1534
Otto was a theologian and foundational botanist. He earned a master's from the University of Mainz in 1509 and joined the Carthusians. Around 10 years later he converted to Protestantism and became a minister at Steinau an der Straße and Neuenburg am Rhein. He then headed a Carmelite school in Strasbourg for eight years and wrote the first history book of the Protestant Church. He studied medicine at the University of Basel, where he received his doctorate in 1530, and was appointed city doctor in Bern two years later.
