Cosimo III, Grand-Duke of Tuscany, 1642-1723
Cosimo III de' Medici was Grand Duke of Tuscany from 1670 until his death in 1723. Amid marriage troubles with Marguerite Louise d'Orléans (1645-1721), the daughter-in-law to Louis XIV, his father Archduke Fedinando II (1610-1670) urged Cosimo to go on tour in Europe, throughout which he met royalty and celebrities and was well-received. However, his reputation was soon blighted by his policies regarding Jews, whom he had persecuted with zeal, and an estranged relationship with his wife. For the latter part of his reign, he was preoccupied with the succession and perpetuation of his family's hold on Tuscany, especially due to the death of his eldest son (Grand Prince Ferdinando, 1663-1713) and the insolence and insolvency of his surviving son's (Gian Gastone, 1671-1737) as well as to the growing intervention on the part of foreign powers. His heir Gian Gastone sought to reverse his father's controversial persecution laws, neglectful commercial policies, and futile diplomatic efforts. Regardless, following Gian Gastone's death, the Tuscan succession went to the House of Lorraine.
