Peter Damian, 1007?-1072

Italian monastic reformer born in Ravenna around 1007. He studied canon law and theology in Faenza and Parma. Around 1035, he entered the monastic hermitage of Fonte Avellana, which was founded as its own order of hermits based on the Camaldolese founded by Saint Romuald. He became a leading reformer of the Gregorian reform, and was was Cardinal Bishop of Ostia and administator of the Diocese of Gubbio. He served as papal legate to mediate several disputes in France, Italy, and Germany.
