Joachim Murat, King of Naples, 1767-1815
French military officer and statesman, who served in the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars. A loyal supporter of Napoleon Bonaparte, he married Caroline Bonaparte (1782-1839), sister of Napoleon in 1800, became Maréchal d'Empire, and was made Prince Murat, Grand Duke of Berg, from 1806 to 1808. He was then named King of Naples, a title he held from 1808 until 1815. Following the French defeat at the Battle of Leipzig (October 16-19, 1813), he signed the Treaty of Naples in January 1814, switching to the Coalition in order to preserve his throne. However, upon knowledge that the Coalition endeavored the restoration of Ferdinand IV of Naples and Sicily (1751-1825), he declared war on Austria in March 1815. His defeat at the Battle of Tolentino (May 2-3, 1815) resulted in his unsuccessful attempt at reconciling with Napoleon in Corsica and his failed invasion of Italy. He was captured by the forces of Ferdinand IV, tried for treason and found guilty, and executed on October 13, 1815.
