Colonna, Marco Antonio, 1535-1584

Marco Antonio Colonna was an Italian aristocrat, military officer, and governor. Born into the powerful Colonna family, his rebellious behavior left him disinherited, yet he was able to recover some of the family's feudal lands with the help of Pope Pius IV (1499-1565). He fought for the Holy League against the Ottomans, leading the Spanish cavalry and commanding the papal flagship at the Battle of Lepanto (1571). For his service, he was made Captain General of the Church. In 1577, King Philip II (1527-1598) made Colonna the Viceroy of Sicily, a position which he held until his death in 1584).
