Van Buren, Martin, 1782-1862
American politician, who was the eighth president of the United States from 1837 to 1841, following his tenure as vice-president (1833-1837) to Andrew Jackson and role as United States ambassador to Great Britain (1831-1832). He also served the state of New York as state senator (1813-1820), attorney general (1815-1819), United States Senator (1821-1828), and governor (1829-1831).
