Constantine, the African, approximately 1020-1087
Constantine the African was a North African-born physician, who settled in Italy and later became a Benedictine monk. He is known for translating a vast number of Arabic texts on medicine to Latin, which were published as textbooks and used for several centuries and throughout Europe.Constantine lived the final decades of his life as a monk, residing at the abbey of Monte Cassino.
