Pliny, the Elder, 23 or 24-79

He was a Roman author, natural historian, and military commander, perhaps best known for his encyclopedic Naturalis historia. The uncle of Pliny the Younger and a friend of the emperor Vespasian, he died during rescue operations at Stabiae during the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius.
