Villani, Giovanni, -1348
Italian banker, merchant, civil servant, and compiler of a chronicler of Florence. He was a partner of the main pre-Medici banking family in Florence, the Peruzzi, and later managed the Florentine merchant company of the Buonaccorsi, both occupations led to extensive travel and residences abroad. At various times, he served the municipal government and represented Florence in commercial relations with other states. In 1346, he was imprisoned for fraud while mitigating the impact of bankruptcy on the Buonaccorsi firm. He died of the plague in 1348.
