Paul I, Emperor of Russia, 1754-1801

Russian Emperor. Child of Peter III and Catherine II. He was married to Wilhelmina Louisa of Hesse-Darmstadt (d. 1776) and Sophie Dorotha of Würtemberg (d.1828). He committed the Russian Empire to intervention in the French Revolutionary wars, first in countering the French militarily and diplomatically and then in seeking reproachment, and annexed eastern Georgia. Alienated by the nobility and under scrutiny for his peculiar autocratic rule, he was assassinated by disaffected military officers. He was also de facto Grand Master of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem from 1799 until his death in 1801.
