Morales, Cristóbal de, approximately 1500-1553

Spanish composer of sacred music from Seville, who trained in the choir at the Catedral de Sevilla and was maestro de capilla at the Catedral de Ávila (1526-1529), the Catedral de Plasència (1529-1532), the Catedral de Toledo (1545-1546?), and at the Catedral de Málaga (1551-?). He was also employed in Rome in the service of Pope Paul III (1468-1549), in the 1530s and until his appointment in Toledo in 1545, and in Marchena in the service of Luis Cristóbal Ponce de León y Téllez-Girón, Duque de Arcos (1512-1573) and as teacher to Juan Navarro (ca. 1530-1580), before his appointment in Málaga in 1551. Of his many compositions, twenty-two masses, over 100 motets, and numerous liturgical pieces are extant. He died most likely in Marchéna in either September or October, 1553.
