Monge, Gaspard, 1746-1818

French mathematician, physicist, and politician. He was employed at an engineering school and by the navy. During the French Revolution, he was Ministère de la Marine for a short period, and then founded the École polytechnique and published works on geometry, which led to him being credited as the inventor of descriptive geometry and founder of differential geometry. He participated as an academic in Napoleon's expedition to Egypt as well as to Syria, soon after becoming a member of the Senate and obtaining the title Comte de Péluse.
