Neckam, Alexander, 1157-1217
English scholar, teacher, and abbot. He studied the humanities in Paris, and returned to England to teach theology at schools in Dunstable and in Oxford. He joined the Augustinian canons of Cirencester, appointed for a time as an ecclesiastical judge-delegate in service to King John, and was chosen abbot of Cirencester in 1213. In 1215, he attended the Fourth Lateran Council in Rome. During his career, he produced diverse works on various themes, including theology, grammar, lexicography, and poetry.
