Rabanus Maurus, Archbishop of Mainz, 784?-856

German Benedictine prelate, theologian, and encyclopedist, and poet, who was abbot of Fulda (822-842) and later archbishop of Mainz (847-856). He produced numerous exegeses and hymns, yet his most well-known works are a manual for the vocation of prospective clergy, entitled De clericorum institutione, and an encyclopedia entitiled De rerum naturis.
