Charles VIII, King of France, 1470-1498
Charles VIII was King of France. Son of Louis XI (1423-1483) and grandson of Charles VII (1403-1461), he ascended the throne at the age of 13. The regency headed by his sister Anne (1461-1522) and her husband Peter II, Duke of Bourbon (1438-1503) had successfully wrested control of the government from rebel lords. In his majority, Charles was able to annex authority of Brittany and attempted, albeit unsuccessfully, to obtain rights to the Neapolitan throne through conquest and diplomacy. His latter endeavors in Italy resulted in debt and military disarray, yet were a boon for French art and literature. He died unexpectedly in early-April 1498.
